Book of Boba Fett [Spoilers]

Yes, I can’t help it. It’s my dayjob … broader societal and political issues of contentious and sensitive nature. But yes, no further along on the topic, I agree.

I think the Luke in this episode was miles better than in Mando season 2 though, but it was of course still a bit distracting at times, when he seemed to be different versions of Hamill through the 80s … sometimes seeming more skinny in his face, the eyes differing… but I thought it was very well done with voice and hair and face, compared to their previous attempt.

I’m kind of glad they didn’t recast Luke, but at the same time I think I’d have less of an issue with it.

This is true, and a good point. Still loved his looks (hence my profile pic).

Totally agree. The Luke in season 2 may have been technically worse, but since he had so little screen time it doesn’t have the same sort of impact. It comes down more to a matter of personal experience in this situation.

On another note, something I absolutely loved about this episode (and many of the episodes on Tatooine, really) was how much of a western it was. I grew up on Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, and Hopalong Cassidy, so it’s a very sentimental genre for me.

Well, if I recall correctly, they did hire someone who, as a fan, applied his own deep fake skills to the Mando season 2 finale to improve the look of Luke in that scene for that very reason. So I’d hope it’s better this time around.

You know you can never change it now, right?

EDIT: So Cad Bane was like “Boba Fett worked for the Empire!” when Cad Bane was the one working for Darth Sidious lol

Well, he may not know. But he wasn’t saying it because he found it distasteful (whether he does or not is besides the point) but because he thinks Cobb Vanth will find it distasteful.

I was thinking about the last two episodes, and why we’ve seen Mando and Luke so much. My suspicion is that Grogu will choose Mando and when Luke comes to drop him off he will end up getting caught in the Pyke fight.

Without these two episodes to explain why Luke would show up, it would have been harder to explain why. Preempts the fanboys cries of “Why would Luke help Boba Fett?!?! It doesn’t make any sense! REEEEE!!”

Now that would be an awkward reunion.

Oh I like this. We get to see Luke fighting again, plus the added tension regarding their last meeting. After the fight, a nod from Boba to Luke, “But, you still owe me a new blaster”.

Welp, I binged the show and I just finished the finale, and I will only say this; I am a Boba Fett fangirl once again!

The soundtrack alone makes me want to try and find where to buy it. the Soiundtrack that is.

Well and truly worth it.

Episode: King Kong Rancor

This was pretty much what I expected, and I loved it!

The (un)expected betrayal of the three crime families, jetpack rain of fire, droids with shields, rancor on droid action, rancor eating Pykes, rancor doing a King Kong on a tower. Grogu snuggling up to the rancor after making it fall asleep. All nice stuff. And Fennec Shand’s assassination skills are finally shown at the end. Peli Motto and the Major Domo (I can’t recall if we finally got a name for him now) could be a funny couple - loved her “no time for that now” as a retort to his “a pleasure meeting you” or something

The Mods, I really like them, with their shiny vespas and tiny blasters.

Grogu’s return was expected, and I’m glad Luke didn’t show up. Grogu’s choice is going to make season 3 of Mando interesting.

Now, is Cad Bane dead? I think probably not, since the blinking light in his chest wasn’t a bomb, I assume it’s letting us know that he’s still alive. At least in my head canon. It could also be a comlink or something to his Pyke employers… but I think he’s alive still (wishful thinking I know).

I’m sad the gamorreans died, although this being Star Wars, they only fell down a cliff and we saw no bodies, who knows, they could still be alive, but I assume they’re not…

Also, the Pykes killing the tuskens wasn’t a surprise, but it seems to confirm that they are all dead, even if I haven’t managed to see the Warrior among the bodies…

Cobb Vanth in the bacta tank was a nice addendum, with the modder there for some reason (new arm?). This means he can show up in Mandalorian, and if they go for more Boba Fett seasons, we have an ally in Freetown.

And I agree with @Lady_Awinita about the soundtrack, I need the soundtrack for when I get to run my Star Wars campaign again.

On a scale from 11 to 23, I give this series a solid 21.3

  4. Yes, I know you have armor, I don’t care, don’t stand out in the open like a di’kut!

All in all, it was an excellent episode. It felt a bit like “Well that escalated quickly,” as if they had more planned but then realized “Oh, we only get seven episodes for this?” and had to rush things, but they did a good job aside from the tactics.

There were a few other detractors, though:

  • Those super-shiny bikes aren’t particularly discreet, and you used those to chase the Major-Domo earlier so it isn’t like they’re off the Pykes’ radar.
  • The shields. He says “and our kinetic weapons are too high velocity.” If something can be “too high velocity” then something else can be not “too high velocity.” In which case, why couldn’t you just walk through the shield? Particularly Mando/Boba since they have the armor to protect them from radiation or whatever and are grounded, like we see multiple times in Clone Wars.
  • The Scorponek droids need some reprogramming, they always shoot at least a meter low.
  • Hollywood does not understand internal damage, at all. They think “internal damage” refers to dramatic PTSD they can use for flashbacks. NO. “Internal damage” refers to the organ/skeletal/brain trauma sustained when you’re FLUNG AROUND LIKE A RAG DOLL AND SMASHED INTO BUILDINGS. Armor can protect you from some blunt force trauma by cushioning the blow, but it can only do so much. What it can’t do so much to protect you from is what I like to call “instantaneous transfer of kinetic energy due to sudden deceleration upon contact with a solid object possessing a high inertia.” ITKEDSDUCSOPHI for short. (Pronounced "IT-kids-duck-SO-fee)
Same goes for you, Knight Rider.

I was not surprised by much in the episode. Even if I couldn’t predict it before watching, I could see it coming while watching, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it. The Rancor/King Kong homage was nice, and I enjoyed the Rancor/Scorponek combat even if it wasn’t always a case study in tactical genius.

Speaking of the Scorponek, I would swear I’ve seen those things before, but the ground crew replaced my memory module and this new one is malfunctioning badly. Was it just droideka concept art, or have we actually seen them somewhere? Because I recognized them as soon as I saw the silhouettes, but I just can’t place it.

I’m pretty sure Cad Bane is dead, if for no other reason than who’s going to rescue him? But he was stabbed in the chest and left to bleed out, so I’d say he’s dead unless he pulls a Fennec Shand and somehow survives for hours and hours without bleeding out, though in her case at least you can argue that the wound was seared shut.

As for Cobb Vanth, I’m not sure why he’d need cybernetics unless the modder is just getting creative with his instructions. Maybe he’d need a cyber lung, but he was shot in his right chest, not the most vital area, and based on my knowledge of thoracic gunshot wounds (from story research), he should be okay with some timely intervention. In fact, he’d be okay even if all they do is stop the bleeding and make sure he can breathe okay on one lung until they get him to a bacta tank, and then Star Wars medicine should be able to take care of the rest.

I am a little confused about two things: The “gunned down” comment, and when he made it to a bacta tank. So sure, he didn’t die (because bacta can’t resurrect), but then why “gunned down”? Was he just waiting in town, or did they rush him to Boba’s palace for a bacta treatment? The latter seems unlikely for a variety of reasons.

Finally, Baby Yoda made the right choice, Luke made the wrong one. The Jedi’s shedding of attachment is a weakness, not an aid. Mandos have strong family/loyalty values, and make for much better allies than Jedi for that reason among others.
I had hoped they’d take a more Legends tack with Luke and not have him continue the Jedi’s shedding of attachment for his new, better Jedi order, so I didn’t comment on the choice last week because I was hoping Luke was giving Baby Yoda a false choice, where anything other than “both” was the wrong answer.

Retrospective on the now-complete season:

All in all, pretty good. I only have one complaint with the overarching story, and that’s Boba Fett’s unaddressed Stockholm syndrome. Other than that, I enjoyed the narrative arc and only differed on “tactics,” let’s say.

I’d rate it a good 7/10, with the first couple episodes being more in the realm of 5-6/10 and the latter episodes improving to a solid 8/10. 9/10 for the episode of The Mandalorian we got spliced in.

For contrast, I’d rate The Mandalorian season 1 10/10, and The Mandalorian season 2 8/10.

I would love to see the stats for the Scorponek droids.

Hmm… let’s see.

First draft:
621111 9 Soak, 50 WT, 13 ST, 2/2 M/R Defense.
Skills: Gunnery 2, Brawl 1.
Talents: Adversary 2.
Abilities: Shielded: When shield is active, gain +2/2 M/R Defense. Once per hit, may suffer 3 Strain to reduce incoming damage by 10.
Equipment: Scorponek Blasters (Gunnery; Dam 20; Crit 3; Range: Long; Linked 1, Pierce 3), Smashing Legs (Brawl; Dam 12; Crit 2; Range: Engaged; Disorient 3, Knockdown, Pierce 2).

The guns have a low chance to hit, but when they do they hurt a lot without much need for net Success/Advantage and can even deal with light vehicles. The legs are much more likely to hit, but deal reduced damage and are easier to avoid.

It was what we expected for the finale, but I still loved it.

I did have two small nitpicks.

Boba jotted on the notepad for all of 2 seconds, then the Domo went outside and read several sentences from it. Boba must know some bounty hunter shorthand?

Fennic leaves in a speeder bike. Fennec shows up stealthily sniping above the mod racers, saving them. Fennec leaves when she jumps on her speeder bike…which was sitting beside the mod racers. No one saw her pull up literally in the middle of the fight, shut off the bike, get off, climb up a wall, then start sniping?

Ah! I knew I’d seen them before! Good choice to pull them from Legends. Not sure where I happened across them before, probably droid research for Clone Wars campaigns.

NOT MY FAULT! All I did was have them refuel and give a fresh wax

I liked the Weequay, no name just “Weequay!” and somehow it sticks ?
