Cool Ships that do cool stuff!

So I’m just gonna keep trying to get conversation happening on this site.

Today we are talking about the Ghtroc 720 Light Freighter or the Stainless Steel Space Turtle.

At first blush the weakness of its only gun and its piss poor maneuverability are deal breakers but you get a lot if you are willing to invest in your ride. First off, it has the most armor and the most cargo space of any silhouette 4 vehicle in the game and a metric frackton of hull trauma. Second it is one of only a few freighters in its class with medium range sensors, something that there is only one cannon method of increasing.

If your crew is willing to invest in Skilled Jockey or Tuned Maneuvering Thrusters you end up with a shockingly capable ship for its size with a huge amount of room for cargo and passengers.

It also has 4 HP, which can be used to buff its armament pretty well.

One I really like is the Baudo star yacht. Stock, its armament is lackluster (single laser cannon) and it has only 1 armor, but I like it for a non-combat oriented party with a Rigger. It’s fancy, fast, and has a lot of mod potential with 6 HP. With all the buffs from a Rigger, it ends up being very nimble (3) and acceptably durable (2 Armor, 27 HTT, 12 SST). The 6 HP can be invested into increased speed, more weapons, and a whole variety of utility upgrades and amenities that make it a very good VIP transport and high-end courier vessel. Its main limitation is only 60 Enc, but it should be moving important people or small, important cargoes, rather than bulk hauling.

Silhouette 4, Speed 4, Handling 1, Armor 1, HTT 26, SST 10, 1/1 Defense, Short sensors, Class 2/12 Hypderdrive, 2 crew, 8 passengers, 60 Encumbrance capacity.

Keep Talking Thunderbolt! maybe we can get a third person chatting. with very little modding you can get this puppy to being one of the fastest ships in the galaxy of its size.

I feel like if a ship has words like “Luxury transport” or “Yacht” in the name then the Luxury Passenger Compartments mod should cost 0 hard points to install or be already considered installed at no cost.

I’d like to turn your attention from the Star yacht to another ship that has potential:
The KST-100 Kestrel Light Executive Transport

Hull Type/Class: Light Freighter/KST-100.
Manufacturer: Corellian Engineering Corporation.
Hyperdrive: Primary: Class 3, Backup: Class 12.
Navicomputer: Yes.
Sensor Range: Short.
Ship’s Complement: One pilot, one co-pilot.
Encumbrance Capacity: 70.
Passenger Capacity: 4.
Consumables: Two months.
Price/Rarity: 120,000 credits/7.
Customization Hard Points: 4.
Forward-mounted light laser cannons (Fire Arc Forward; Damage 6; Critical 3; Range [Short]; Linked 1).

OK so this ship seems pretty standard until you realize its a silhouette 3 vehicle, the size of a fat starfighter. Because of its small silhouette, high speed and maneuverability its great for getting past blockades because gunboats and capitol ships have huge penalties to even target it. You can send fighters after it but it has a lot of ability to house mods and innate ability to take the stray laser shot.

The ability to go anywhere a fighter can go with freighter capabilities is really cool.

I remember the KST as the recommendation of all the power gamers. XD

For a bit of a controversial pick, I’ll go with the G9 Rigger Light Freighter. Dirt cheap and with stats to match, it’s underwhelming on the surface. Leaving aside that I think it’s understatted for what it is (seriously, 80 Encumbrance???), it has one key feature: A very large, open cargo bay, able to easily hold an escape pod with space to spare.

Depending on the dimensions, I let my PCs hold a starfighter in the cargo hold, and the massive bay doors let them launch mid-combat.

Additionally, it has a lot of HP and existing weapon mounts that can be used to up its damage, compensating for a weak hull with disproportionate damage output.

Silhouette 4, Speed 2, Handling -2, Armor 2, HTT 25, SST 15, 1/1 Defense.

Hull Type/Class: Light Freighter/Rigger-class
Manufacturer: Corellian Engineering Corporation.
Hyperdrive: Primary: Class 3, Backup: None.
Navicomputer: Yes.
Sensor Range: Medium
Ship’s Complement: One pilot, one co-pilot.
Encumbrance Capacity: 80.
Passenger Capacity: 6.
Consumables: One month.
Price/Rarity: 55,000 credits/5.
Customization Hard Points: 4.
Dorsal auto-blasters (Fire Arc Forward; Damage 3; Critical 5; Range [Close]; Auto-Fire), outrigger turret-mounted light blaster cannon (Fire Arc Forward, Starboard, and Aft; Damage 4; Critical 4; Range [Close]), ventral wing-mounted light blaster cannon (Fire Arc Forward; Damage 4; Critical 4; Range [Close]).

Twilight-SWE
Man that ugly thing has a bunch of guns.

Surprisingly capable for the price, I am especially surprised to see it has medium range sensors. Real sh*tbox drug van energy. Hard to believe the most powerful Jedi in the galaxy used to go on missions in one of those.

Hands down my favorite ship in the game. It does most things averagely for a freighter but it has a few standout features. First and foremost, it has long range sensors, which means it has long range comms. Second if you read the flavor text in the books it is featured in it comes with the Environmental Simulators mod and a quote “powerful scientific computer” which is never explicitly statted out but a creative player can probably make use of in game.

To me this is an excellent forward observer/spy ship, Its its 8 months of consumables mean it can sit tight in a system for months gathering sensor data and listening in on comms for useful bits of intel and then direct fighters in a battlefield. It benefits greatly from passive stealth systems and skilled slicers using it to raid data networks and covertly pass along information.
